Training is not compulsory, but is highly encouraged for athletes to improve their skills and confidence in the events that athletes will compete in on the weekend. Training activities include both track and field events; normally focusing on the events for the coming weekend’s competition.
Training is on Wednesday afternoons from 5pm sharp to 6.30pm. Parents with children 10 years old and under are asked to stay at the ground with their children. There is no “drop and run”, whilst we do have a duty of care to provide a safe environment for your child, we are not babysitters.
Parents will also be asked to help coach or assist a coach at training. This ensures training sessions run smoothly, on time and safely.
We run off a training schedule where we warm up and then rotate 4 events in their particular age group. These events change each week coinciding with what events are coming up that following Saturday.
Please note there is no “one on one” training in club training time. Should you wish to train your child individually before or after club training please speak to the Coach Co-ordinator. There are also some specialist training squads that train. Please see the Athletics West “Find a coach” page for more details.
Training takes place at Ernest Johnson Oval, South Perth.

When attending training:
- Athletes 10yrs and under must have an adult responsible for them in attendance at the training location
- Athletes must wear appropriate sports clothing and enclosed shoes. If using spikes, they must also have cross trainers for warm-up and cool down
- Athletes must inform the coach of any recent injury, as well as any current physical discomfort (no matter how slight it may be)
- Athletes are to stay with their group until the end of the session and must inform their coach if they need to leave the group for any reason (eg toilet or drink break)
- During throws training all equipment must remain on the ground until it is the athlete’s turn to throw or unless directed by the coach
